You Can Do It! Easy Things to Work on Everyday
Encouraging Advice by Coach Fulmer
Here are some little things that you can do to improve your game in the off season. Adding these to your daily routine can help elevate you from being a good player to a great player!
1) Stay in shape – run a little every day, ride your bike, go for a swim, walk your dog, KEEP your legs moving! Every physical activity you can do off the court will help you on the court!
2) Shoot at least 100 shots everyday. Your shot continues to improve as your muscle memory improves. The more you shoot, the less you have to think about it, and the better your shot will get.
3) Dribble. A LOT! Be it a basketball or a tennis ball, dribble and carry a ball with you wherever you go.
4) Play other sports. Run track, play soccer, hit a volleyball, whatever you want to do, do it! Cross training with multiple sports is proven to make you a better athlete. Several college football and basketball coaches have said they look at players who were multi-sport athletes. It says a lot about your discipline.
5) Become a student of the game. Watch college matches! Read articles online. Talk to older players. Learn, learn, learn! You don’t learn calculus or biology the first time you look at it. It takes a whole semester of practice (and even then its still hard) You have to do it every day.
6) Stretch! Your muscles will love you for it. Take Yoga or Pilates. Lay on the floor at your house and touch your toes. See a message therapist. The more you stretch, the better your muscles will respond and the less likely you are to have debilitating injuries.
7) And finally...teach someone else to play. It sounds funny, but teaching someone something you have learned helps you retain it. Research shows that when you explain something out loud to someone else, your comprehension increases. Also, TALKING about basketball makes you less nervous to talk during a game!
